| Principal's Philosophy: Caring, Concern, Compassion Posted: 15 Feb 2011 03:11 PM PST POSTED: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 SAN ANTONIO -- When she first entered the world of teaching at the suggestion of her mother, Sylvia Wade said she realized it was her calling.Forty-nine years -- and thousands of students later -- as she prepares to retire, Wade said her instincts were right. "The way a teacher can get on my bad side in a hurry is not to care about a kid," said Wade, the principal at Pat Neff Middle School in the Northside Independent School District."Middle school is a nurturing ground," she said, one not void of challenges."This is my 'Jerry Springer school' because of the drama that happens at the middle-school level," Wade said.Drama is nothing new for Wade, who is black."I remember sitting in on a lunch counter at Kresse's in Tennessee, protesting segregation," she said.Fluent in Spanish, Wade said that when she talks to kids, she can "talk to them from the Hispanic standpoint. I can talk to them from the Jamaican standpoint. I can talk to them from the African-American standpoint."They are all parts, she said, of her own ethnicity. The important thing, she said, is talking to children. In addition to the three Rs -- reading, writing and arithmetic -- she said she emphasizes the three Cs: caring, concern and compassion.Wade said she plans to retire at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. That will mark Neff Middle School's 50th anniversary and 50 years as an educator for Wade."It's hard. It's really hard," she said. "I've been psyching myself up for it for a long time."
