The philosophy department will hold a memorial service for former lecturer Michael "Mickey" Perloff on Friday, Jan. 21.

The service, which is open to the public, will be held in Heinz Chapel at 1 p.m. Doors open at noon.

Collie Henderson, the department's administrative assistant, said the service will feature a variety of speakers who knew Perloff well.

She said the speakers include Ron Hoy and Jess Hollahan, friends of Perloff; James Allen and Stephen Engstrom, faculty members; David DeLorenzo, an undergraduate studying political science; and Meghan Dupree, a philosophy graduate student.

Perloff, also an assistant chair for the philosophy department, died on Nov. 19 after having a stroke at the age of 72.

At Pitt, Perloff taught classes including Introduction to Logic and Introduction to Philosophical Problems. He also worked as an undergraduate adviser for philosophy students.

JC student starts philosophy club

Johnson City High School senior Christian Owens says his love of philosophy led to his starting a philosophy club.

&#8220We get together to discuss different philosophical issues,&#8221 said Owens, who founded the club his junior year.

Owens has a strong academic record and maintains a grade point average of 100 while also serving as the student body president. He takes AP classes in calculus, physics, English and government and said his favorite subjects include English and history. He simply enjoys learning, he said.

&#8220My passion is philosophy and philanthropy,&#8221 said Owens, adding he plans to study philosophy and literature in college. He is considering attending Macaulay Honors College in New York City or SUNY Geneseo.

His other interests include trying different cultural foods, a desire to travel and exploring the wilderness. He also admits he enjoys a challenging game of ping pong. Outside of school, Owens spends much of his time doing volunteer work at the Vestal Nursing Home.
