The award is given for a record of achievement, the accomplishment of clearly defined goals and the appropriateness of the program for emulation by others in the field.

Produced and edited by undergraduate students in a class taught by David Concepcion, a philosophy professor who serves as the managing editor, the journal is in its fourth year of publication and is distributed internationally to college and university libraries.

"We are especially pleased with this award because it acknowledges that Ball State students are world leaders," Concepcion said. "Working with students from Australia, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom and Slovenia, Ball State students teach other students and scholars around the world how to review academic papers and how to improve their own writing. This prize can only enhance our international reputation and further solidify our position as the best undergraduate philosophy journal in the world."

HILLSBOROUGH: Ice hockey opens with two wins

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 10:26 PM PST

Joe Bennett's coaching philosophy has always been defense first.

Through the first two games of the season, the Hillsborough High ice hockey team has fallen right in line with that philosophy.

The Raiders opened the season with a 3-0 win over Watchung Hills, then followed that win with a 4-0 shutout of West Essex on Monday.

"That has always been my coaching style," said Bennett, whose team received 30 saves from goaltender Bobby Palzer in the win over West Essex. "I am a defensive coach and that is our philosophy. We stress defense first and that leads to offensive opportunities."

Alex Vitale, Craig Ismaili, Brett Siegrist and Jeff Killian scored goals for the Raiders in the win over West Essex, the defending Group B state champions.

The 2-0 start has the Raiders thinking this could be another solid season. A year ago Hillsborough was 18-6-4 and reached the quarterfinals of the state A Division tournament.

"We certainly have enough experience returning to have another success year," said Bennett, whose team hosts Bridgewater on Friday at Pro-Tech Ponds. "But every year is different and every team is different. We need to focus on finding our identity as a team. We're slowly developing one and our outlook is certainly positive."

The Raiders return their top two scorers from a year ago in seniors Vitale (22 goals and seven assists) and Siegrist (13 goals and 18 assists). Palzer is also back in goal after a strong season as a freshman a year ago.

Also returning are a trio of solid defensemen in senior Frank Napoletano, junior Nick Bierwirth and sophomore Alex Wizna. Bennett is also looking for seniors Ismaili and Killian, as well as junior Kyle Burke to emerge into bigger roles this season.

"We're looking for them to break out this year," he said. "They played with the varsity last year but now they will have bigger roles this year."

Once again, Hillsborough will face a tough schedule that not only includes the teams from the tough Skyland Conference, but non-league games with the likes of West Essex, Hopewell Valley, West Morris, Sparta and Roxbury.

"The Skyland Conference is considered one of the stronger conferences in the state," Bennett said. "The competition is tough and it seems like every team has a rivalry with each other. A lot of the kids play on the same club teams and they know each other. It's fun when they get together and play against each other for their high school teams.

"The competition is at a pretty high level and I think that leads to a lot of lower scoring games."

So far this year the Raiders have looked right at home in that sort of defensive battle.
