Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, Morehead Alumni Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, will deliver the commencement address at UNC's Winter Commencement ceremony today at the Smith Center.The ceremony is set for 2 to 3:30 p.m.Sayre-McCord's address continues a tradition of members of the faculty delivering the December commencement address.Chancellor Holden Thorp will preside at the ceremony for students who graduated in August as well as those graduating Sunday.Graduates in Carolina blue (bachelor's degree recipients) and black (master's, doctoral, professional) caps and gowns will enter to "Procession of the Nobles" by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, played by the 50-member UNC Ceremonial Band.To date, 2,330 students have applied to graduate today. Administrators anticipate awarding 1,071 bachelor's, 894 master's, 352 doctoral and 13 professional degrees. The latter are from the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing and pharmacy.Sayre-McCord joined the UNC faculty in 1985 and chaired the department for 10 years. He is the founding co-director of UNC's philosophy, politics and economics program and is a member of the advisory board of the Parr Center, which examines ethical questions in numerous fields.He has won UNC's Tanner Award for Teaching Excellence twice, in 1987 and 2005, and held several distinguished term professorships - including the prestigious Bowman and Gordon Gray - and received numerous fellowships. Sayre-McCord regularly gives invited lectures at universities and conferences around the world.
