Marlins open season with new coach

A new philosophy is awaiting the Maumelle Marlins for the 2010 season in the Central Arkansas Swim League.

To start with, the Marlins have a new coach in Sarper Turker.

"Some of the families have told me that in the past it was more like swim lessons and we are gong to change that,'' Turker said. "We want it to be fun, but to swim you have to be disciplined. To be very good, you have to be disciplined and when you are good, that is when it is fun.''

The Marlins begin their season at home Saturday against Lakewood and Lonoke.

Turker takes over for Janet Toland. He is a native of Ankara, Turkey, and has swum competitively for international and collegiate teams.

His coaching experience includes serving as a student assistant for Henderson State University; he has more than 10 years teaching swimmers stroke development.

At Henderson, Turker was a conference champion, a four-year conference scholar athlete. In 2008 he placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Championships and was named an all-American.

He represented Turkey in the Junior European Swim Meet in Cyprus, where he won gold medals on relays and was second in 100-meter butterfly.

"I'm excited," he said. "This is a very good team and we expect to do very well.''

Maumelle is part of the nine-team league that competes each Saturday morning during June and July. The season begins Saturday.

The league has teams in Sherwood, North Little Rock (Lakewood), Little Rock (Otter Creek and Westside YMCA), Lonoke, Bryant and, beginning this year, Conway.

CASL has more than 1,000 swimmers and has provided competition for more than 25 years.

Team scores are kept and the league champion is crowned at the Meet of Champions, based on dual-meet records.

Swimmers are divided into Bronze, Silver or Gold divisions in each event, based on the swimmers' best time in each event. All newcomers start the season in the Bronze division. Returning swimmers will begin the season at their level from the previous season.

It may be now or never

"Bottom line is when [the Lakers] won Game 3, from that point on we felt like every game is a must game,'' Rivers said. "We said it in Game 4, we said it again today, and we'll say it again. That's how we have to approach the game. We lost our wiggle room by losing that home game. The Lakers played well enough to have home-court advantage, and so it's to their advantage. It's going to be a challenge for us because they're going to be great, and we're going to have to beat them at their best because they're going to be great there, and we can't expect anything else.''

"Eat when you drink, drink when you eat," is the philosophy among the Spanish-style tapas bars and eateries that have sprung up in dynamic cities across the globe over recent years.

Based on the second floor of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit, Tapas Y Vino offers a refined dining experience, featuring a wide variety of tapas, along with a cellar that boasts a comprehensive collection of wines from around the world.

An Elegant Setting
While the contemporary-style décor has a touch of elegance, the restaurant nevertheless enjoys a friendly ambiance. You can opt for a comfy sofa, or take to a bar stool, from which you can catch a glimpse of the restaurant's highly-skilled chefs as they create their culinary masterpieces. At the far end of Tapas Y Vino is a private area, which is ideal for groups of up to six diners.

If you wish to enjoy an alcoholic drink, order a cocktail - teetotalers can choose from a range of 'mocktails'. There are also plenty of vintage wines available from cellars that cater to both Old World and New World tastes.

The Definitive Article
While there is an impressive choice of wines available, it would really make sense to order some Sangria, since this is a popular, traditional chilled drink from Spain, prepared by combining dry red wine, brandy, fruit juice, soda and spices with chunks of ice and fruit.

An appetizing starter comprising spiced potatoes with a hint of mustard can really get your appetite going, while you may also wish to try Assorted Spanish Cold Cuts with Manchego. This is a light meat dish that includes cold cuts of smoked wild boar, which combine perfectly with a mild and creamy manchego cheese made from sheep's milk. Some caper berries on the side of the dish serve to counter the after taste.

Seafood Specialty
The signature dish at Tapas Y Vino is Paella, a Valencian dish that features grilled prawns on a bed of saffron rice sautéed with clams, green peas, mussels and scallops. Alternative versions, including meat-based and vegetarian options are also available at Tapas Y Vino.

Another interesting seafood-based dish is Seared Scallops with Serrano Ham, Parsley and Breadcrumbs, which offers a marvelously entertaining option. The fresh prawns in olive oil at Tapas Y Vino are also delightful.

A Time to Share
Tasty tapas are ideal for sharing. All dishes apart from the paella come with little snacks that can be eaten in just a few bites. If you're with a group of friends, you'll certainly get the chance to try lots of new things.

To top off your dining experience, why not indulge in some strawberry consommé or churros with hot chocolate? Either one can provide the perfect finale for your exotic Spanish dining experience.

Tapas Y Vino is open from Monday through Saturday from 6 – 11 pm. For further information or to make a reservation, please call Tel: +66 (0)2 204 4158.
