From Sporting News' vault, here are past interviews with some of the game's biggest coaches regarding how John Wooden influenced them: "Between fast breaks, pressing defense and playing the game of basketball like a ballet instead of rugby are a few of the many wonderful contributions that I was able to take from Coach Wooden's system. He has always been an ideal proponent of the game of basketball." "I always thought John Wooden was ahead of his time. He played at a quicker tempo than most people did then. I borrowed a lot of what he did in developing my coaching philosophy. He had great players, but he also had a great system to take advantage of his players' talents." "The thing I appreciated the most was that Coach Wooden stressed simplicity. He emphasized keeping the game simple. Coach Wooden also emphasized the importance of practice. He wanted to accomplish his teaching during practice time. It always amazed me how humble Coach Wooden was, considering the tremendous success he enjoyed." "I learned basketball as a player and coach under him. Over the years, you can do Xs and Os, but the basic underlying philosophy of what you are trying to do—your teaching, philosophy of scheduling, mental preparation and all the things that go into having a successful season—are things that I learned from him. Whatever success we had at Louisville, I give him a lot of credit because I learned from him." "I was starting out as a high school and junior college coach in Southern California when Coach Wooden was at UCLA and I remember always trying to do the same things that he was doing there. He had a major impact on my coaching philosophy, whether it was in the way I conduct practices, prepare for games or deal with people. The major philosophy of his I have tried to carry on is the team-oriented game. With Coach Wooden's style of play, the team is the important thing, as opposed to individuals." "I first met John Wooden at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' summer camp in August 1964, and he talked to us about plays, philosophy, style and how to coach. In fact, I won several games at the buzzer in high school and junior college using one of the last-second plays he shared with us. The effect he had on my coaching philosophy was that I, along with Tex Winter, used his practice philosophy more than any other person. So you could say his philosophy about practice was pretty well ingrained into what we did in our practice sessions in my first 16 years of coaching." "His motivational methods certainly have impacted my philosophy and the one big factor was his pyramid to success." "His 'Pyramid of Success' is something most all coaches live by. I, along with my colleagues, use his approach to coaching the game of basketball as the basis for our coaching philosophy. The consistency that he achieved his success is unmatched by today's standards. And while we attempt to copy his Xs and Os, it's the other attributes that he brought to the position of a college head coach that we all strive to duplicate. He did it with class, honesty and integrity without all the fanfare and hype prevalent in our current game." "John Wooden made it very clear that you did not have to scream and stomp up and down to be a great teacher/coach. Coach Wooden always conducted himself in a class, professional manner. He was firm but fair and always treated his players as if they were his own children/family." "Tremendous effect, more so as I looked back on a consistent, class, fundamental approach to success. No compromise of values to win. Unique and rare, very special." Five Filters featured article: Into the Abyss. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
