| Mike Nolan's defensive philosophy gets high praise for Miami Dolphins Posted: 25 May 2010 09:34 PM PDT With the Dolphins back on the practice field, cornerback Will Allen says ``everybody is excited'' about new coordinator Mike Nolan's defense. CBS' Phil Simms told us this story: ``One prominent offensive coordinator of a playoff team told me last season, `If Mike Nolan was the defensive coordinator here, we would win the Super Bowl.' He's so well thought of around the league.'' NBC's Cris Collinsworth said Nolan, the ex-49ers coach, is Miami's ``biggest offseason acquisition'' -- though most would say it's Brandon Marshall or Karlos Dansby -- and said ``Nolan's is as impressive a run defense as any I saw.'' Brian Billick has called Nolan ``the best coach I've ever been around.'' Dan Reeves, who made Nolan a first-time coordinator with the Giants in 1993 (when Nolan was 34), said, ``Every defensive coordinator that's good disguises things, and he's proven he's one of the better ones.'' So what can Dolfans expect? ``Nolan does more things than [predecessor] Paul Pasqualoni,'' said Washington defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, who played in Pasqualoni's Dolphins defense in 2008 and Nolan's Broncos defense in '09. ``Coach P wasn't as experienced a coordinator. Nolan blitzes more than Pasqualoni and he'll attack people as long as you don't give up the big play. The Dolphins' success will depend on the secondary holding up one-on-one. Nolan is really good, a guy you want to play for.'' UniversalDraft.com studied Nolan's Denver tendencies and found he rushed his inside linebackers on passing attempts far more than Pasqualoni did. That trend could repeat here, because Karlos Dansby is a better pass-rusher than ousted Akin Ayodele. Also, Pasqualoni used six defensive backs at once on 30 percent of downs in '09; Nolan did it only 3 percent. Nolan ``gives cornerbacks the opportunity to make plays,'' Allen said. Nolan, adept at adjusting to fit his team's personnel, will use different looks to maximize his defensive line's athleticism. ``I love his philosophy -- it's proven,'' Jason Ferguson said. ``It's an attacking defense and hopefully will cause more turnovers.'' Though Nolan's defense struggled late last year in Denver, it finished seventh (up from 29th the year before, without him) and its sacks jumped by 13, to 39. Miami was 22nd in total defense in '09, leading to Pasqualoni's firing. Tony Sparano said Pat White has altered his delivery, and we hear the team remains determined to get something out of him in the Wildcat. . . . The Dolphins, who briefly discussed a long-term contract for Ronnie Brown last year, now are taking a wait-and-see approach, which Brown understands coming off another injury and entering the final year of his contract. ``I can't control it, so why worry about it? We don't know if there will be a [work stoppage] next season.'' After losing out to New Jersey in Tuesday's 2014 Super Bowl vote, South Florida host committee chairman Rodney Barreto said, ``The fix was in for New York. We threw $1 million extra on the table last night for game-day expenses. We could have put $10 million and it wouldn't have made a difference. We put an incredible presentation that clearly was head-and-shoulders above everyone.'' CHATTER One UM official said the school got good terms on Randy Shannon's buyout if he's fired -- less onerous than Larry Coker's were. Coker got a bit less than half of what he would have been paid if he hadn't been fired. ``We did not want to allow ourselves to be in that position again,'' the official said. | A matter of political philosophy, not politics, for Fraser Posted: 25 May 2010 08:30 PM PDT Now that Malcolm Fraser has finally taken the ultimate step and quit the Liberal Party, it has to be asked: what took him so long? Twenty-seven years have passed since Fraser lost office to a resurgent Labor Party led by Bob Hawke. Fraser left the parliament soon after and handed the Liberal Party to the next generation, headed by John Howard and Andrew Peacock. Ever since, his legacy as the Liberal leader who wrested power from Gough Whitlam and won three elections, governing for more than seven years, has been under attack from within his own party. The shorthand take on the Fraser years on the non-Labor side has long been that it was a wasted opportunity, a time plagued by ideological confusion. Fraser's view of his time as prime minister is that his was a genuine Liberal government, in the tradition of party founder Sir Robert Menzies, who did not envisage the organisation as a conservative political outfit. Fraser expounds at length on this theme in his recently-released memoir/biography, co-authored with Margaret Simons. It seems that Fraser was willing to bear the slings and arrows of his erstwhile fellow Liberals, as long as he felt he could see signs that the party, having got through John Howard's long period of leadership, would hew towards a less conservative stance on issues of race, border protection, foreign policy and the environment. However, the ascension of Tony Abbott, the most prominent of all of Howard's political acolytes, to the Liberal leadership last December appears to have snuffed out Fraser's hopes once and for all; he reportedly resigned from the party within days of Abbott taking over. Labor can take little comfort from this. Fraser is scathing in his assessment of the Rudd government. For Malcolm Fraser, this is a matter of political philosophy, not politics.
